Boo!!! Giveaway anyone?

Recently, I won a layer cake from Material Girl Quilts

and teamed it with the latest in Sweetwater Label club

to make a whole bunch of these little baskets.

Each of these takes 4 layer cake squares from the layer cake.  2 of these squares should be matching..
  • Lining: Two matching squares each trimmed to 6 1/4 and 9 1/2 wide.  (The remaining 3 3/4 x 9 1/2 can be used for the sides of another basket).
  • Bottom: Cut a piece 6 1/2 by 9 1/2
  • Sides Two pieces cut from one square, each 3 1/2 by 9 1/2.
  • Fusible: 12 1/2 by 9 1/2
  • Handles (optional): Two pieces of ribbon 7 1/2 long

If you've done any kind of bag assembly, you can build one of these in 30 mins.  They were so much fun to assemble!  They finish roughly 4 1/2 inches high.  (I can post a quick tutorial if anyone is interested - let me know.)

Now, for the giveaway.  I will send you a mini kit to make you own little basket or I will make the basket for you!   To win, just comment on this post.  Contest ends Tuesday, Oct 16 at 6 pm est.

This is a followers only giveaway.

To enter, please comment on this post and tell me that you are a follower and whether, if you win, you would like the kit or whether you would like me to make the basket for you.

A Zip Bag Bonanza - plus a giveaway!

Got two giveaways going on (how fun!).  For the charm pack of Summer Breeze as part of the SMS Giveaway - comment on this post.

Read on for the giveaway associated with this post!

Today, I have the honor of guest posting at Sew We Quilt as part of a series of tutorials called Comfort and Joy!

I will be sharing a tutorial for my small zipped bag.  (For those of you visiting from SWQ - welcome!  Hope you'll come back and visit again.)

The bag measures at 6 by 3 1/2 and is the perfect size for carrying along just your phone and a credit card or two.   Please go read my tutorial here.

I making quite a number of these for holiday gifts this year for family and friends.  Here are just a few more:

I sourced my zippers and the swivel clips from two different Etsy stores.  When I told Char and Jennie about my upcoming blog mention of these zipped bags, both of these wonderful ladies were excited to sponsor a giveaway to their store.

First, the swivel clips.  Char from Etsy shop: Charsbeads4U  is offering a bag of 20 of these swivel clips.  Char was great to work with and shipped my order the same day.  I've had so much fun making these bags, I'm about to order more swivel clips from her!

Second, the zippers came from the Etsy shop: ZipIt  .  Jennie is offering a $10 gift certificate to her store.  I've order zippers several times from Jennie and packages arrive quickly.

In addition, Jennie has offered a discount code for 15% off their order for any of my readers!  Use discount code:  NCWEEKENDQUILTER

I will draw two winners.

The rules:
  • To enter, leave a comment on this blog post.
  • Go visit one or both of their Etsy shops and tell me about a product they have offered that you like.   Valid entries must contain a reference to an item in one or both of their shops.
  • One comment per person.  You do not have to follow my blog (although I'd love it if you did so!)
  • Winner will be notified through email so make sure you aren't a no reply blogger.
  • The swivel clips can only be mailed to a US address so let me know if your are outside US and would therefore like to win gift certificate to Zipit.
  • Giveaway closes on Thursday evening, Dec 22 at 9pm EST.

The ultimate giveaway

Green Fairy Quilts is getting ready for their annual trip to Romania to support an orphanage  with quilts and money for food and school supplies.  Judi is having a giveaway and donating to the cause gives you extra entries.  Judi and her husband are very generous of their time and support - the ultimate giveaway!  For more information, visit her post!  My compliments to Judi and all the wonderful people who donated quilts and money to support their mission.

Judi's blog is one that I follow daily.  She does amazing long arm quilting and has very fun quilt patterns.  Her on-line store is a source for many of the precuts I purchase.

I found a fun envelope in my mail box yesterday.  Earlier in the summer I won a giveaway at Retromummy.  Corrie is another one of my favorite bloggers - she is quite the busy lady, has the most adorable children and is generous with information (and giveaways!).   Corrie, Thanks!!

My DD (13) picks up one of the charm packs and says
'Ooooohhhh!  I just love this fabric!  Make me something with it!'.

'What?', I asked.

'I don't care.  Just something.  This fabric is so ME!'

Smile.  She is my daughter!

Little sewing, much dancing

This has been a very busy week for my family.  Both of my girls are appearing in dance recitals.  This meant 3 evenings of rehearsals and then five shows spread this Thursday through Sunday.   Their dance school puts on a wonderful performance each year.  This years theme was Anastasia.  Girls from the ages of 5 to 18 dance.

All this wonderful dancing has left very little time for sewing but I finally managed to turn a previously FMQ piece of fabric into a case for my iphone.  Simple envelope style with a velcro closure. (Fabric and label are from Sweetwater.)

I've order a bit of fabric as well... just because.  Discovered a new online store (1 Choice for Quilting) that had Pure in stock so I just had to order some...   Everything came packaged really well and there was also an envelope of goodies inside.

Finally, I have won a couple of giveaways recently(!!!)  The first was a copy of Scrap-Basket Sensations from Sinta - her blog PinkPincushion .   Then,  when I was busy getting caught up on my blog list and saw on Retromummy's blog that I won her giveaway!  I entered awhile ago so I know it is fun fabric but I don't recall specifically what!

And found for you quite the awesome giveaway sponsored by Shabby Fabrics  at Just One More Stitch

News from the Quilting Blog-o-sphere!

Wanted to share some fun things I found while reading through blogs:

  • SewCalGirl is hosting the 2011 Golden Quilters Awards with the opportunity to nominate and then vote for categories such as Best Designer or Best Quilt Store.   Nominations open on March 1.   There are prize possibilities for blog PR and for nominating!
  • Fat Quarterly is hosting a fabric based March Madness.  Download your brackets and enjoy the fun!
and a couple of important blogging tips:

I follow or subscribe to every blog I am interested in.  (I used to bookmark things but then spent far too much time navigating to blogs without updates - or missing a blog announcement of a giveaway.)  Google Reader is a great way to see what is new but you don't get to see the blog posts actually on the blog page (and catch the fun buttons, headers etc.)  There is a way you can easily navigate to all those blog updates:
  1. While in Google Reader, in the upper right corner, choose SETTINGS and from the dropdown, choose READER SETTINGS.
  2. Choose GOODIES
  3. Find the section titled PUT READER IN A BOOKMARK and then drag that NEXT button up to your bookmark bar
  4. Click on NEXT in your bookmark bar and navigate to each new blog post!
Turn off comment validation so people don't have to enter that code.  I've chosen to have my comments moderated so they come to my email for approval but there is many a blog out there that is recommended you only need to do that for older comments.  Google spam filters have apparently improved quite a bit.  (I made this change recently and hope that it makes it easier for people leaving comments.)

I use POST OPTIONS in Google blogger to set (some of) my posts up to be automatically posted at a date in the future.  This particular one was set for March 1.  Since I have quite the busy work week, it helps me actually make time for blogging by sitting down on the weekend and doing a live weekend post and a scheduled mid-week post.

Some quilting eye candy (just because)

Some yardage for Central Park, Sunkissed, and Lollipop to go with my sweet stash and, oh yes, a Pure layer cake.

Back the real world

My lovely end of year vacation has ended so now it is back to work .... putting a major dent in my quilting time!   As a result, I move back to spending more time dreaming about quilting than actually quilting.

I greatly enjoyed the New Year's mystery quilt from Planet Patchwork - here are the 4 blocks.  This was my first basket block so that in and of itself made it fun.  I stopped short of joining them (sashing in white with an outside border) because I am considering making it a table runner using 3 of the blocks instead.

I also quilted my tree from this post and a tree skirt that I'll post a picture of in the future.  Both were from the 12 Days of Christmas Kate Spain line.   I was pleased how they each turned out.  I just need to bind them both.

The giveaway I won from Tara at Sew Unique Creations came in the mail today.  The book looks fun and  will likely expand my bag making skills as I try some of the techniques out.  Tara also included a set of 3 of her patterns:  My Favorite Table Runner, Eighths are Enough, and Turkey Red.   Turkey Red is going on my make list for next Christmas so I need to start collecting various red fabrics.  For the spring, I think I will make the table runner first.  It was incredibly generous of Tara to include the bonus patterns.  Thank you!
