V4W Block 26!

Block 26 in the Votes for Women  block of the week is called Ladies Wreath.  This block was very straight forward to assemble - and I managed to do it without using the seam ripper once!

I've been knitting a small shawl / scarf and cast off last night.  Clearly it needs to be blocked so that the lace edge really pops.  I think I will add a line of crochet along the top edge to stop the curling.  I've very little of the yarn left.  This is Natura in a colorway 118.

Dragonfly

Dragonfly is the name I have given to my quilt made from Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt a long called Easy Street.

This was such a fun mystery quilt along.   I made the quilt smaller than Bonnie's - mine finished at roughly 52 by 72.

The fabric I used was Moda Good Fortune.  The border was done in the green dragonfly print and the backing the gray dragonfly hence the quilt name.

Quilting was done by Cathy Kirk in an overall pattern called Deb's Swirls.

This was gifted to my sister-in-law who turned 50 yesterday.  I mailed the package Tuesday - always worry about sending a quilt project through the mail.  The package traveled from NC to Mass in just 2 days.

My SIL called me and was so very excited.  She loves the colors.  She loves the quilt.  She even loves the quilt label (which I forgot to take a photo of).

I am linking up my February finish with A Lovely Year of Finishes.

FNSI: Happy iPad

It is a cold and rainy Saturday morning here in NC but my iPad has a nice warm and cozy new home.  This type of bag assembles quite quickly - made this last night during FNSI.

I still need to attach the 2nd piece of velcro.  You'll see I made a little pocket for my stylus to also travel in style.

The Dr Who TARDIS fabric is from Spoonflower.  The lining is a gray flannel.  I used 2 layers of batting to give it extra thickness.

Hope the weather is nice and sunny and warm for you!  Me, I'm building an ark.

Blocks are Done for Right Turn

My blocks are all done for my scrappy quilt.  I've laid them out so that I've no repeat squares directly touching and so that the light squares form the diamonds.

This was made from a Fig Tree jelly roll Buttercup.  I just love the soft colors.

You've seen these scrappy trip around the world quilts all over the internet.  I may call this quilt 'right turn' because once I had sewn and seam ripped, I assembled the strips randomly.  (See my blog post here.)   I do intend to quilt this one myself.  It will finish as 48" square unless I decide to add a border.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments on my mini quilt that I shared as part of the It's All About Me blog hop.  (Comments put me in a happy mood all day!)  You can find the full schedule here on Marlene's Blog Stitchin By the Lake.   Mdmn Samm and Marlene - thanks for another fun hop!   I truly am blog hop crazy and looking forward to sharing my next project as part of the Nancy Drew is the Clue hop!

Warning - Blog Hop Crazy Ahead

It is all about the hop, isn't it?

I made a button for my little lady.

And surrounded her with memories of past (Dots on Dots) and future (Nancy Drew is the Clue) blog hops!  (That little scrap of blue fabric for the pincushion is from the Nancy Drew fabric.)

And then I surrounded her with flying geese - a favorite block to make.

The hair is mine - although I think I've just a tad more gray.  I do wear glasses but I am not quite as wide as this lady.  I printed the fabric background to get my mini dots on dots quilt there and the Keep Calm & Quilt On sign.  This was the first time I every tried this - freezer paper onto fabric in an ink jet printer. (It worked on the third try - first and second try, oh boy, kinda messy.)

Thanks to Mdmn Samm and Marlene for a fun hop!  I am clearly addicted to the hops!  Now take another sip of your morning brew and enjoy the rest of today's lovely entries.

1/2 way done with Votes for Women!

Block 25 in the Votes for Women  block of the week is called The Carrie Nation Quilt.  This block was very straight forward to assemble - still needed the seam ripper because I twisted the little 4 patches.

This is a 49 block quilt so finishing block 25 puts us beyond the halfway point!!!

Tomorrow's the first day of the It's All About Me blog hop.  My day is Wednesday and I can't wait to share my little lady.  You can find the full schedule here on Marlene's Blog Stitchin By the Lake.   Mdmn Samm and Marlene - thanks for what promises to be another fun hop!

Sew Mama Sew

February block for the Blogger Girls Block of the Month.  There are 6 blocks in total and you can choose to make each block twice using very different fabric placement.

Unlike the first block where I didn't need the directions in order to build the block, I followed the directions for this on.  I found them well written but there was some fabric waste.   Since I am using Sew Mama Sew layer cake (with some extra yardage of two of the red prints), my preference would have been for less waste.  However, I was able to carve our 4 HST blocks from the waste so that should come in handy at some point.

I really do like this fabric - fun to quilt with quilty patterned fabric!

This is the January block.

Voting

Block 24 in the Votes for Women  block of the week is called True Blue - Too Smart and is in recognition of how women who enjoyed reading and writing were portrayed in society.  It should have been a relatively easy block to assemble but I had to redo the entire 9 patch because I assembled the 4 patches twisted.  Clearly choosing my blue (ok aqua) fabric was required given the block name.

Now on the subject of Voting (great segway, huh?), the nominations are in for the 2013 Quilting awards and it is time to vote.  Go visit SewCalGal to vote for your favorites in the following categories:

My Celtic Woman

My middle child turns 17 today.   Hard to believe - 17 - one year away from being an adult.

She loves to sing.  Her favorite group is Celtic Woman and she has seen them in concert many times.  In fact, because of the violin player in Celtic Woman (amazing if you've never seen her, check her out), my DD has been taking violin lessons for two years.

I remember this day 17 years ago.

A pregnancy check up appointment at 31 weeks and then a baby being born that night so many weeks early.

The doctor telling us that our beautiful daughter had Down syndrome.

After many weeks in the NICU, she came home weighing just 4 pounds.

She has grown into a beautiful young lady, full of life and laughter.  Sometimes I call her Switzerland because she would keep the peace between her older brother and her young sister.  (Although, to be fair, there are other times when she was the cause of the trouble!)

I made this quilt for my DD and gave it to her for Christmas but waited until her birthday to post this finish.

The pattern is an Irish Chain made from a Jelly Roll of Marmalade and yardage of Bella Porcelain.  It was quilted by Cathy Kirk.  The backing is a nice soft flannel from the line.  I just love the feel of the quilt and it looks wonderful on her bed.

The quilt is named Celtic.

Happy Birthday my dear sweet daughter!

I am so very proud of you!

I made one more block and went from

Sun was out so took some fun photos -

This will be a wall hanging 24" square.  I am thinking about quilting nested circles.

Progress, progress

I am very proud that I have been staying right on schedule with the weekly blocks from the Votes for Women  block of the week.  This one was called Girls' Joy and I had fun in the assembly process.

It is a 49 block program so we are fast approaching the 1/2 way mark.

Right now, once the block is assembled, I will press but then don't spend any energy squaring the block up.  Now that I have a lot of blocks to lay out and look at, I am going to start making decisions on settings for specific blocks.  My current vision is to set them on point or at least half on point.   The solid I used is a Bella color called Porcelain which turns out to be hard to get.  I've been stockpiling to make sure I have enough.  Time to break out the calculator and see how much I am actually going to need!

I've made a few more blocks for the scrappy trip around the world quilt. Perhaps I will call this one 'right turn' because once I had sewn and seam ripped, I am assembling the strips randomly.  (See my blog post here.)

I am putting the light color in a consistent position so there will be some order to the quilt when done.  I am using a jelly roll and did need to incorporate a light from a different Fig Tree line.  The quilt will finish at 48 by 48.  The colors of this fabric line are just beautiful.

February Goal - Finish Easy Street

I've been making quilts in celebration of when family members hit the magical big-50.  I've made 3 quilts so far, 2 of them in 2012.  My sister-in-law is up next - she hits that magical day this month.

Easy Street is headed her way.

But I have to finish it first!

The quilt needs borders and binding.  I have an appointment with my LAQ mid-month so I'd better get going!

This is my goal for February and I am going to link up with  A Lovely Year of Finishes.
