Farmer's Wife - Autumn (9) and Ava (10)

Made two Farmer's Wife blocks this week.

Block 9 - Autumn.  I hadn't intended to use this particular brown/tan fabric in this block but sewed almost the entire thing together before I realized I intended to do this block with a lighter shade to offer more contrast with the red.  Decided not to take it all apart though!.

Block 10 - Ava

Since there are 99 blocks in total, I decided to gather the first 9 together for a group shot and will do the same for each group of 9 until all the blocks are done.

They are so much fun to take out and play with!  Fabrics are from Moda Fig Tree.

Interested in playing along?  These are from the book -   Farmer's Wife 1930's Sampler Quilt  and there are two great quilt alongs with plenty of tips and ideas.  VeryKerryBerry  is doing the blocks in numerical order while Gnome Angel is doing them in order from easiest to hardest.

When I made my first quilt (glamour shots here) from Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt , I made the books in numerical order because I was determined to make all of them and knew if I left the toughest to the end, I would avoid those tough ones all together.

However, if you only want to make some of them, starting with the easiest is a great idea.  You'll end up with lots of blocks and can decide to stop at any time.

Although, for me, making these blocks are a bit like eating potato chips.  It is hard to stop.

Happy Stitching!

  1. Your "potato chips" are looking great together! You have balanced the colors and tones so well. Makes me want to get mine out and see how they look together :)

  2. I have made 19 so far and I have the fabrics for my next two blocks picked out and ready for cutting. We have a quilt show next June, so my friend and I are on a tighter schedule. I am addicted to these blocks!! You can't go wrong with Fig Tree fabric as hers is always gorgeous. What method are you finding yourself using so far?
