Lighthouses are fabulous icons of North Carolina. There are 7 lighthouses along the coast and my stamp collection represents the 4 that I have had an opportunity to visit.
Somewhere in the middle of quilting my stamp quilt, I decided not to make it a quilt. Instead, I made it a bucket / bag!!
The bag stands about 13" tall and is round. All 4 lighthouses were used. I lined it with a solid blue that matches the sky and added handles. It is a fun size bag and I've several ideas what to store in it. Right now, it is holding the fabric for my next quilt!
Now, back to the lighthouses.
Cape Hatteras lighthouse is likely the most iconic.
In 1999, NC moved the lighthouse from the beach where it was in danger of eroding into the ocean to a site 2900 feet inland. A great summary of the move can be found here.
The Currituck lighthouse is set back from the shoreline. I have climbed this lighthouse just once because of my fear of heights. Once I climbed the 214 steps to the top, I was so scared that I plastered myself on the wall and couldn't walk to the railing much less take in the view from all directions!
Two of my kids have no problems with enjoying the view.
Bodie Island lighthouse isn't open for public climbing but we enjoy visiting it anyway. The lightkeepers cottage is open (part museum, part bookstore.)
To get to Ocracoke Island, you take a ferry. The Oracoke Island lighthouse isn't open to the public to climb but you can peer inside.
And now before you dash off to your mail box to send off that letter to your BFF, take a few minutes and visit all the other ladies I am lucky enough to share today with!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful job on the stamps. Love the bag.
ReplyDeleteI bet you make top spot today! I toyed with doing the lighthouses myself but decided on the pig. Your stamp is awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your lighthouses! It would have been a beautiful quilt too, but the bucket bag is really fun and useful!
ReplyDeleteThis takes the cake.....love the lighthouses!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo of your stamp quilt in the mailbox. Then seeing all the lighthouses on the quilt was wonderful. Then you turned it into a bag...are you a magician too>? Lol. You really captured those lighthouses perfectly. I miss being able to see lighthouses as I live in a land locked state now, but I loved driving along the Oregon coast and seeing some lighthouses when we would vacation from WA.
ReplyDeleteWonderful blocks....I love your lighthouses. Too cute to turn them into a bag. Great job.
ReplyDeletevery very nice and what a treasure love what you did with your stamp unique.
ReplyDeletelovely - great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove the light houses and Bucket! Cool!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful lighthouses made into a bag!
ReplyDeleteLighthouses and NC---perfect choice! You are right though---I bet everyone recognizes the Cape Hatteras one. I did a bit of a light house tour while visiting coastal Oregon a few years back and did climb up in one of them. The only other one I was in was near Brunswick, GA. I can get up there but looking down is sometimes a problem---not quite as plastered to the interior as you perhaps though.
ReplyDeleteBut I digress---you did great job on your piece and now you can use it more often since you made it into a bag! Well done, Patty.
Your stamps are beautiful and they make a great bag! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love that you made 4 different designs with the same theme. I'm with you on enjoying the view from heights. I would have been plastered to the wall as well!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to display your lighthouse stamps. Great job.
ReplyDeleteYour photo of the lighthouses in the mailbox is just too sweet looking...love it! Your stamp is beautiful and it made a great bucket bag! Thanks for sharing all the stories about lighthouses. I've never seen one (sad, I know) but you've made me want to go on a road trip to check some out. :O)
ReplyDeleteLove the lighthouses! :) Pat
ReplyDeletelovely items, I'm in NC too and went to hatteras, didn't go up though.... my son did a project in school in 4th grade to create a copy of a lighthouse, I don't think it was one of yours shown, I think it had grey in it, now I can't remember the name, a local quilt store wants to print out or embroider blocks for quilts with the NC light houses :-)
ReplyDeleteLove lighthouses. You have done a spectacular job recreating them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. You did such a great job and a Bucket Bag is a Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your lighthouses! Each one is unique! So Cute! And I love that somewhere along the way it became a bag. - I do the same thing - where I start out making something and it becomes something else entirely. Great job!

ReplyDeleteI love lighthouses -- you did a great job depicting yours. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise other places were famous for lighthouses! South Australia has a lot due to our rugged coastline and the fierce winds of the Southern Ocean. But none are as fancy as your stripes ones!
ReplyDeleteWow, you did a fantastic job with your stamps. That is one awesome bag!!!
