Hello Sweetie!

Hello Sweetie!

My Dr Who quilt is all done!  I had a blast quilting and thread painting all of the blocks and then went with a basic straight line quilting for the background.  I like how some of the items like the book and the scarf seem to just be floating since there is no defined background.

The blocks were all paper pieced and came from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

I have this hanging in our bonus room where I can see it from my sewing corner.  I put the Weeping Angel on the edge so she is looking towards the corner of the room where the dust bunnies live.  The fish tank right below her should be safe - fish don't have eye lids and therefore can't blink!

My previous blog posts (here, here & here) have close up photos of the individual blocks.

Quilting this quilt top was my ALYOF goal for April - I'll be linking up here!   (Here is the link to my goal post.)

The last of the thread painting

It is just so much fun to come home from work and sit down and loose myself in the FMQ / thread painting of my Dr Who Quilt.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the scarf block until I gave it some character with thread.

For the Hello Sweetie block, I outlined the 'letters' and then stippled around them.  (Excuse the threads that need trimming....)

Last by not least is the TARDIS.  I may go back and FMQ in the windows - not sure I like how they are popping up.

Here is the overall quilt before the FMQ journey started -

Basting away

Tried a new method for basting that I saw on my friend Frieda's blog.   I secure down the 3 layers on a large piece of sewing cardboard using binder clips.  This worked really well!!!  (Watching Frozen on my iPad while I worked was an added bonus!)

I was able to put it up on my kitchen island.  Nothing slipped around.  No tape to mess with.  And I didn't have to crawl all over the floor!

I used a mix of bent safety pins and straight pins with my pinmors.   Didn't quite have enough but I think it will work.

This is my Dr Who quilt.  Had a little fun with this Cyberman - he doesn't look too scary in this photo, does he?

Rest assured, he is as menacing as ever!

Quilting this quilt top is my ALYOF goal for April - I'll be linking up here!   The blocks were all paper pieced and came from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

Dr Who quilt top assembled

Now all basted and ready for quilting.

Loving the back side of the quilt flimsy - you can see all the paper piecing mess  magic.

These blocks came from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

Assembling this quilt top was my ALYOF goal for March - I'll be linking up here!   (Here is my original blog post.)

The Dalek block is my favorite.  I had gotten reasonably good by that block in my paper piecing accuracy.

Dr Who Quotes

Dr Who quilt top is all assembled - isn't this a fun picture of the back side, showing all that paper piecing pieces?

I want to add some quotes to the quilt so practiced doing this with my FMQ skills.   I wrote on the fabric in pencil and found that I needed to write bigger otherwise I would overrun the text.

The first one was my best one - hello sweetie.

then Allons-y and Geronimo.  Geronimo was completely freehand, complete with spelling error!

Finally, timey wimey wibbly wobbly

I think this technique will work as long as I accept it will be far from perfect.

Progress on Dr who quilt

Paper backing all removed, blocks trimmed and sewn together for the body of my Dr Who wall hanging.

The text in just there via a photo editor.  I am trying to work out the quotes I will use - my daughter has that assignment - and the placement.

I still need to attach the side and the top.

Doctor Who

I am so excited to assemble my Doctor Who quilt top.  With these letters - each finish at 8 1/2 high by 6 1/2 wide - and my blocks below, I have what I hope will be a very fun quilt top to assemble.   Here is one version of a possible layout.

One thing I want to add in the borders of the quilt is some hand embroidered quotes.  Need some help on this one - do I do this to the quilt top flimsy?  or once it is quilted?

Assembling this quilt top will be my ALYOF goal for March - I'll be linking up here!

A crack in time

It may look like a smile but it is actually a crack in time!   This was the final block I am making from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

I now have 11 blocks and have planned out a really fun way to set up this quilt.  Here are my other blocks:

and one more

Before I can assemble, I need to remove all the paper backing.  What a chore this is!

This weekend, I also completed the next step in Melissa's Start Bright quilt-a-long was to create the center star.   I'm using Moda Scrumptious fabric.  So pretty.

River Song's Journal

Dr Who fan's will (hopefully!) recognize River Song's journal - the book where she keeps track of when and where she meets up with the Doctor's timeline.

Finally got another block done!   This is my 10th.  Here are the others

These blocks are all from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.  There are 20 blocks in all and I've skipped a few.

This will be a wall hanging and I'm going after a 3 by 4 block setting.  That means I've 2 more block to make.  I'm having a bit of trouble deciding!

Hello Sweetie!

Another block done for the Dr Who quilt a long.  I tackled this block over many, many days and don't really want to know how many hours I spent given the large volumes of little, itty bitty pieces.  I love the River Song character in the show - here is a link to a youtube video of all the times she says Hello Sweetie.

Here are all my blocks.

Galifrey Falls No More

Dr Who fan here.  I loved the 50th anniversary special !!  How about you?

I enjoyed making this block of Galifrey from the  Whovian-inspired Quilt-Along from Caroline and Soma from Whims and Fancies and the Doctor.   I've skipped a few blocks along the way - here is my complete set of blocks

Dr Who Scarf

Yet another block in the  Whovian-inspired Quilt-Along from Caroline and Soma from Whims and Fancies and the Doctor.   I've never seen any of the episodes featuring the 4th doctor but everyone recognizes this impossibly long scarf as iconic Dr Who.

This block was quite fun to assemble.  I did cheat on the fringe bit.  In this little area about 2" long, there were supposed to be 20-25 scraps of fabric.  I went with about 10!

I've been selective on which blocks I've made - of the 11 posted so far, this is my 6th one.  I choose this one in honor on the major league Whovian living in my house - my DD (15) who is more than half way through knitting her very own Dr Who scarf!

When complete, this scarf will be at least 12 feet long!

The best bit?  She and I like to sit and knit together while watching Downton Abbey (and Dr Who).  We are late to the Downton party so are working our way through Season 2.

And being the good mom that I am, I offered to make her a fun knitting bag from any fabric in my stash.  She said, no thanks.  She likes the knitting bag she is using.   (smile)

PS Here are my other completed  blocks.

Exterminate!!!

Yet another block in the Whovian-inspired Quilt-Along from Caroline and Soma from Whims and Fancies and the Doctor.   This is the tenth block.  It is by FAR the best job I have done in paper piecing.  I discovered that the secret for accuracy is to leave the paper on until the whole block is assembled.

Here are the 3 villains

.
There are 20 blocks in the series.  I've skipped 4 of them so far and have 6 in my collection.   Such fun!

Cybermen!

Oh my - my DD is turning into a cyberman!

Compared to the Weeping Angel block, this Cyberman went together quite easily.  One thing I tried for the first time was leaving on the foundation paper until I assembled the block.  It did seem to result in a better alignment and fit.

I also had fun wearing it around the house like a mask in the almost finished state.

The side pieces took me almost as long to do as compared to the rest of the block.  I kept making errors.

Here are the rest of my blocks.

Care to join in?  There are 20 blocks in the Whovian-inspired Quilt-Alongfrom Caroline and Soma from Whims and Fancies and the Doctor.  I've chosen to skip about five of them so far.

Love Doctor Who!
