My family and I spent a week at the NC beach last week. Weather was wonderful - a mix of sun with some rain. We tend to spend the morning and late afternoons / evenings on the sand which means plenty of time in the middle of the day for quilting.
I pieced together my large size Schnibble quilt using Sweetwater Pure fabric.
Couldn't resist the photo location for the above photo - my daughter and I are behind the quilt and holding it as high as we can.
Here is another view - more true to color.
Need some opinions. What should I do for the border? I am worried that the quilt is overwhelming as a bed quilt. I love the colors but it feels like I have too much going on. The Schnibble calls for a inner border (probably 2 inches) and then a piano key border.
If I continue to make this a bed quilt, it needs roughly 5 inches to get it the size I want. If I just make it a larger than normal couch quilt, I'll call it done!
What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI can understand your hesitation about a piano key border... there is a lot going on pattern-wise and fabric-wise in this quilt top. So much to look at...
My first thought was a narrow inner border (solid - chocolate or blue...or a creamy white) and then a wider outer border (blue or chocolate) of either a solid or one of the prints.
I think this would tie everything together and help calm down the busy-ness some.
Of course, as is... it'd be a lovely throw quilt... aren't I helpful? *lol*
What a beautiful quilt! I´d love to see it with a light blue border and brown binding. No piano key border...but that is just my opinion. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteThis quilt is lovely. I would go with a narrow inner border and a wider inner border. Use it as a wonderful bed quilt. Can't see a piano keyboard border on this one.

We spend a week at Nags Head in July. I wish I'd have thought of taking a quilt photo there. Of course, I didn't bring a quilt with me :)
ReplyDelete1. I'd say leave it this size and add a solid chocolate binding. done. Borderless is a modern take, though, so you have to really be into it. (hey, julie herman just had her "Skip the Borders: Easy Patterns for Modern Quilts" published if you want to take a look)
ReplyDelete2.Borders are traditional and so I'd apply the multiples rule to make a small solid border then a slightly larger one.
3. Oooh, hey, a flange and border would probably get you up to 5 inches and look really nice!
One other idea--you could put in a solid border, adding star blocks to the 4 corners. I think that would really bring out the stars!
ReplyDeleteI love it but if you think it is too much, how about 1" light then 4" darker, not necessarily solid, but reads solid?
